Writer Wallace Stegner once called the National Park system the “best idea we ever had,” and we’re definitely not going to argue with that one—they reflect our deep-rooted need to be close to nature. And when you visit even just one of the 58 National Parks in the United States, nature is what you’re going to get (case in point: there are more than 40 waterfalls in Yellowstone alone). But the marquee parks—Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone—are just a small sampling of your travel options. So strap on your sandals and start exploring because there’s probably a park closer to you than you thought. Check out the NPS.gov for ideas.
