2014 is here, and it’s the perfect year to get moving. You have just shy of 365 days ahead of you to fill up with new places, new faces and plenty of spontaneous adventure.

Photographer Allison Maggy became something of an expert in spur-of-the-moment exploration in 2013, as demonstrated by her envy-inducing Instagram journal (@maggyallison). We caught up with the 25-year-old Washington, D.C. dweller to get her tried-and-true tips for making the most of the new year:

Make the most of weekends

There is so much you can do with a short amount of time.  Why not have a drink in a tent on the beach and wake to pumping surf instead of going to the same bar you go to every weekend? You’ll save yourself a hangover and that brunch bill the next day.

Open a credit card with airline miles

If you’re spending the money already, you might as well get some extra miles out of it.

Find the hidden gems in your city or town

If funds are tight, discover new places in your community: a new restaurant, a new neighborhood, a new hiking trail.

Buy a tent

And invest in some camping and outdoor gear while you’re at it so you’ll be prepared for a camping trip on a whim.  It’s so much easier to be spontaneous when you have proper gear ready to grab and go.

Sleep on floors

Reach out to friends and friends of friends in places you want to visit and instantly make your trip more affordable.

Research your destination

Make a list of things you want to see in order to make the most of your time. There’s nothing worse than arriving somewhere and wasting time figuring out what to do, especially if it’s a short trip. Just be sure to leave room for spontaneous adventures!
